Bitcoin vs gold FAQ
How many ounces of gold is one Bitcoin worth?
Divide the Bitcoin price by the gold price per troy ounce. This page uses the daily closes of Binance's BTCUSDT and PAXGUSDT markets; the headline figure is today's ratio so far and the chart shows every day since PAXG listed on Binance in August 2020.
Why PAXG instead of the spot gold price?
PAX Gold (PAXG) is a token redeemable for one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold held by Paxos, and Binance publishes its daily prices free alongside Bitcoin's, so both sides come from one exchange at the same 00:00 UTC close. PAXG usually trades within a fraction of a percent of spot gold (XAU) but can drift from it for short periods, so small differences from spot-gold charts are normal.
Are Bitcoin and gold correlated?
Usually only weakly, and the relationship changes over time: the correlation of daily returns has swung between positive and negative since 2020. The charts show the 30-day (short-term) and 90-day (steadier) rolling Pearson correlation of daily log returns; +1 means they moved in lockstep, 0 unrelated, -1 opposite.
