Crypto Taker Buy/Sell Ratio

The taker buy/sell ratio divides the volume bought by market orders (taker buys) by the volume sold by market orders (taker sells). Above 1, aggressive buyers outweigh aggressive sellers; below 1, sellers do. The table shows it for the top 50 coins by open interest over the last 1, 4 and 24 hours, spot and perpetual futures together, with perps and spot apart for 24 hours.

Over the last 24 hours, takers bought $40.21B and sold $38.21B across the top 50 coins, a combined buy/sell ratio of 1.05 (median coin with a defined ratio 1.00). 12 coins had more taker buying than selling and 17 more selling; 21 coins with defined ratios were within 3% of even. The highest ratios were TRX (1.10), NVDA (1.09), LTC (1.09), the lowest LIT (0.87), CL (0.89), ASTER (0.90).

How to read it. A ratio above 1 (green) means takers bought more than they sold over the window; below 1 (red), they sold more. Within 3% of 1 counts as even. Spot and perpetual futures are summed across exchanges in the 1h, 4h and 24h columns; the Perp and Spot columns split the 24 hours. For net dollar flow see the CVD screener; for positioning, the long/short ratio.

Included: Binance, Bybit, Hyperliquid (1-minute bars with a taker buy/sell split, recorded from their public feeds). Minutes without a taker split are excluded from both buys and sells. Excluded: Aster, Bitget, Gate, HTX, KuCoin, Lighter, MEXC, whose feeds here carry no taker buy/sell split. Stablecoins and HIP-3 stock perps are left out. Refreshed every minute. Not financial advice.

Taker buy/sell ratio FAQ

What is the taker buy/sell ratio?

A taker is the side of a trade that crosses the spread with a market order. The taker buy/sell ratio is the volume bought by takers divided by the volume sold by takers over a window. A ratio of 1.20 means takers bought 20% more than they sold; 0.80 means they sold 25% more than they bought. It measures aggression, not positioning: every trade has a buyer and a seller, and the ratio only says which side was in a hurry.

How is it calculated here, and what is left out?

From the 1-minute bars this site records from each exchange's public feed: taker buys are the bar's taker buy volume and taker sells are its volume minus taker buys, summed over the window. Minutes whose feed carries no taker buy/sell split (a feed without the split, the first minute after a reconnect, or one the stream missed) are excluded from both sides rather than counted as selling. When nothing at all was sold the ratio is undefined and shown as a dash.

How is it different from the long/short ratio and CVD?

The long/short ratio counts accounts or positions that are net long, a stock of open bets. The taker ratio measures the flow of market orders over a window. CVD uses the same taker volumes but shows the difference (buys minus sells, in dollars), which favours big coins; the ratio is scale-free, so a small coin and Bitcoin can be compared directly.

Where does the history come from?

The live ratios on these pages come from this site's own recorded bars. The long history on each coin's chart is Gate's hourly taker buy share for its USDT perpetual, stored from October 2023 for the larger Gate perps, next to Binance's 5-minute futures taker ratio since this site started recording it. Older Binance history is not stored yet. Not financial advice.
