Sats per dollar FAQ

What is a satoshi?

A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin: one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin, so 1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats. It is named after Bitcoin's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Wallets and the Lightning Network often show amounts in sats because whole-bitcoin figures get awkwardly small.

How many sats is one dollar?

Divide 100,000,000 by the Bitcoin price in dollars. At $100,000 per BTC one dollar buys 1,000 sats; at $50,000 it buys 2,000. This page shows the figure at the live price, rounded down to whole sats, because a fraction of a satoshi cannot be sent on-chain.

Why does sats per dollar fall when Bitcoin rises?

It is the inverse of the price: when one bitcoin costs more dollars, one dollar buys fewer satoshis. A 10% rise in BTC cuts sats per dollar by about 9%, and the all-time low in sats per dollar is the day of Bitcoin's highest daily close. Bitcoiners sometimes quote it as the dollar's price in sats.

How do I convert BTC to sats?

Multiply by 100,000,000: 0.001 BTC is 100,000 sats and 0.5 BTC is 50,000,000 sats. To go back, divide sats by 100,000,000. To get dollars, multiply the BTC amount by the Bitcoin price.
