Worked example

BTC long, the numbers above
  1. Each fill's size in BTC is its dollar amount ÷ its price. Your 3 fills add up to 0.0369252 BTC for $3,000.00.
  2. Average entry = total cost ÷ total size = $3,000.00 ÷ 0.0369252 = $81,245.44. Bigger fills pull the average towards their price.
  3. Fees: 0.05% of each fill = $1.50 so far. Closing costs 0.05% again, so break-even = average × (1 + fee) ÷ (1 − fee) = $81,326.72, 0.10% above the average.
  4. At the current price of $84,728.80 (+4.29% from the average) the long is at $125.56 after fees on the way in and out.

The formula

Average entry = (Price₁ × Size₁ + Price₂ × Size₂ + …) ÷ (Size₁ + Size₂ + …)

Size in coins = Size in USD ÷ Price · Fees paid = fee rate × Σ (Price × Size)

Break-even (long) = Average × (1 + fee) ÷ (1 − fee) · (short) = Average × (1 − fee) ÷ (1 + fee)

The average entry is weighted by size, so a big fill moves it more than a small one. Dollar-cost averaging a fixed amount buys more coins when the price is low, which pulls the average below the simple mean of your prices. Break-even adds the fee you paid on every fill and the one you will pay to close. Funding is not included.

Crypto Average Entry Price Calculator FAQ

How is the average entry price calculated?

Add up what every fill cost (price × size), then divide by the total size. It is a weighted average: a fill twice as big counts twice as much. With sizes in dollars, each fill's coins are its dollar amount ÷ its price, so cheaper fills buy more coins.

What is the break-even price?

The exit price where the trade makes exactly zero after fees. You paid the fee on every fill and pay it again to close, so for a long it sits a little above the average entry and for a short a little below.

Does leverage change the average entry?

No. Leverage changes the margin, not the prices you filled at. It does change the liquidation price: check it with the liquidation price calculator at your new average.

Is funding included?

No. A perp position also pays or receives funding while it is open, which moves your real break-even over time.
